Litter problem on Chamberlayne Road

The high winds today have highlighted more than usual the problem of litter on Chamberlayne Road.  Crisp packets, newspapers and other lovely items are flying into our front garden and getting trapped in our hedge.  The cars tyres outside the flat are slowly gathering a covering of litter as it blows down the road in an unsightly fashion.  The question is where is it coming from?

Its something we discussed at last nights KRRA meeting at the Constitution Club and resolved to try and at least reduce if not stop altogether.  There are suspicions that the litter collections in the area may need reviewing but something we are going to look into.

It was overall a productive meeting as we managed to get through most of the points on the agenda.  Members have been doing their research into areas of concern - lack of trees in the area, litter, planning and development issues in the community among others.  Crime and speeding are next on the list to tackle.

We are slowly gaining momentum as a Residents Association.

  1. Excellent meeting, very productive, and I particularly liked our new venue - The Constitutional Club! Sounds really grand!

Totally agree with you that litter is a growing problem on Chamberlayne Road, and we need to address this issue with the Council ASAP.

Turning to another issue we discussed, I have done some research and there is an annual ward budget to tackle top issues of concern in Queen's Park. Kensal Rise falls under the Queen’s Park ward.

This budget can be used to address issues such as litter, local transport, highways, parks, health or crime and anti-social behaviour.

Projects are prioritised by our local councillors who are Councillor Michael Adeyeye, Councillor James Denselow and Councillor Simon Green.

Queen’s Park current ward priorities are:

    • Supporting young peoples activities
    • Enhancing Salusbury Road

The ward budget for 2010/2011 was £20,000. I have done a quick sum of the items procured under the 2010/2011 budget and am afraid to said that the whole amount of £20k has been spent!

Below is a % breakdown of how the money was spent:

Contribution to Tiverton Green Consultation Report – 28%
Queens Park area not ward specific events – 25%
Sport Related Activity (Football) – 15%
Signage in KR Triangle & Brent Neighbourhood Watch – 12%
Kilburn Library Gdn Equipment – 10%
Transition Town Allot. Proj. – 10%

From the above, I am afraid to say that it looks like Kensal Rise missed out on getting some specific benefit to its area from this year’s budget.

Going forward I suspect that we can expect some competition for funding as it is clear from the above figures that one particular area of the ward is good at putting its case forward! I mention no names!

Clearly we need to engage our concillors so that our priorities are put forward for the 2011/2012 budget.

Lat night we discussed trees as one of our priorities and whilst skittling on the various ward site pages I noted that Brondesbury Park Ward had three new trees planted in the Avenue for a total cost of £750.

So clearly tree planting is not a bank breaking exercise, and perhaps we should start lobbying for these as discussed last night.

    Keep up the good work!
